The Park & Its Conservancy  

Van Cortlandt Park constitutes 1,146 acres covering ridges and valleys of the Northwest Bronx and is New York City’s third largest park. Athletic fields and playgrounds are scattered about the park’s edges, surrounding a verdant forest fed by Tibbetts Brook. Van Cortlandt was established as a park in 1888 and is home to the country’s first public golf course, the oldest house in the Bronx, and the borough’s largest freshwater lake. This park serves approximately 2.5 million visitors annually and is the most important outdoor space for many working class, minority and immigrant communities in the Bronx.

In 2009, a group of devoted supporters incorporated the non–profit Van Cortlandt Park Conservancy. The Conservancy’s mission is to sustain and enhance the park as a vibrant destination for recreation, leisure and the enjoyment of natural landscapes. In close partnership with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, the Conservancy aims to help care for, preserve and program

Van Cortlandt Park through fundraising efforts as well as public outreach.

The Position 

The Cross Country Trail Maintainer reports directly to a Natural Areas Crew Leader who is part of the Forest Restoration Team in Van Cortlandt Park. Tasks include excavating, leveling trail substrates, retrenching and resetting water bars, clearing swales, correcting trip hazards. The Conservancy staff works under the direction of NYC Parks operations division.


  • Correct worn and eroded sections of the park’s historic cross country running course and surrounding areas
  • Train and supervise volunteers
  • Transport injured runners
  • Use courtesy with park visitors
  • Other tasks as needed


  • Ability to lift at least 50 pounds
  • Previous experience with hand tools such as shovels, rakes, pick axe, crow bar, and hand saw
  • NYS Drivers License
  • Able to work weekends

Hours and Wages: 32 hours/week; $13.50-$16/hr. depending on experience. (Health benefits not included.)
